Designating
October 9 as Messenger Appreciation Day
WHEREAS,
Messengers are a common sight on the downtown streets of San Francisco:
more than 350 bicycle messengers work for over 30 companies that
engage in the same day urgent delivery business which keeps the
wheels of commerce moving smoothly and efficiently; and
WHEREAS,
These same messenger companies employ thousands of additional employees
who deliver packages on foot or by truck, car or motorcycle; and
WHEREAS,
These employees are an integral part of the City's business machinery
and they risk life and limb every day so that the City can function;
and
WHEREAS,
Many of these workers work long hours of low wages and minimal benefits;
and
WHEREAS,
The City and County of San Francisco believes that all its workers
should receive a living wage, good benefits and healthy and safe
working environment; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED,
That the Board of Supervisors of the City and County of San Francisco
expresses its appreciation to the messenger community for the vital
contributions that they make to the business and commerce of our
great City and wishes to remember the messenger workers who have
died in the course of carrying out their vital duties by designating
October 9, 1998 as Messenger Appreciation Day.
