Forget cowboys and Indians, it’s all about zombies and Indians this August in Santa Fe. Zombie Skins: Salon de la Vie Morte, opens Wednesday, Aug. 15 2012, from 6 – 9 pm at Ahalenia Studios (2889 Trades West, Unit E, off of Siler Street) and closes on Sunday, Aug. 19, 2012 with a special reception from 6 – 9 p.m. Sponsored in part by Santa Fe Spirits and Santa Fe Brewing.
The brainchild of artists Ryan Singer, Monty Singer, and Chris Pappan, Zombie Skins was planned before, but nonetheless has an eerie, coincidental timing with the bizarre occurrence of zombie talk in the national news. It features a mix of indigenous artists who are known for staying on the cusp of pop culture. But, viewers may ask, why the focus on zombies?
Participating artist Tom Farris thinks that people are obsessed with zombies as a way of making fun of the repetition and banality of daily life. “It’s the fantasy of not having the pressure to think for oneself and succumb completely to one's primal drives or Id,” Farris says. The influence that comic books and movies have had on this younger generation of artists is relevant, as well. Finally, Zombie Skins is at least a little bit about just exploring a little gory fun (so fun that three of the artists’ children will be participating as well)!
