Think Pink!,
acrylic on
masonite, 36"x24"
When I was eight,
I left a predominantly Native American school to attend an all-African-American
school that had just opened its enrollment to non-blacks. I had
extreme difficulty explaining to my classmates that I wasn't "white,"
I was pink. That made sense to me. Canada has the concept of "metís"
and Mexico has the concept of "mestizo," but the United
States still retains an either/or mentality to ethnicity even when
an increasingly large segment of the population comes from a multiethnic
background.
