  NLRB ruled that the general subversive trend by owners reporting employees as Independent Contractors is illegal. However, true IC's, partnership (esp. collective!) members, and perhaps even sole proprietors have some excellent options. NICA is not necessary ever! The State of California has very cheap Disability Insurance Elective Coverage (DIEC) through the Employment Development Dept (EDD) for the self-employed. After getting DIEC, all one needs do is get individual healthcare (not as expensive as you think) and pay estimated tax to the IRS and the CA Franchise Tax Board quarterly.
