Ajalagi Nusdv Nvgohv Elohi
Cherokee Vision of Elohi

Edited by Virginia M. Sobral and Howard L. Meredith, translated by Wesley Proctor, illustrated by America Meredith

"The Elohi belongs to the whole Cherokee people as no other oral or written tradition does," writes Howard Meredith in the introduction. "Elohi" means Earth, world view, and the oral history of the Cherokee people. In fact, an archaic spelling of Cherokee is "Chelohi" or "I am of the Earth." The oral history traces migration, warfare, contact with other cultures, and a vision of the future. The Elohi offers a rare traditional perspective to Cherokee history, more commonly interpreted by outsiders. The entire work is translated into Cherokee and printed in the Sequoyah syllabary. It should provide excellent practice material for anyone trying to learn the Cherokee language. Meredith's introduction won the Westerner's International 1999 Coke Wood Award for best treatise on a single subject.
