America
Meredith is a Swedish-Cherokee conceptual painter, who was
raised in Oklahoma and resides in San Francisco. She attended
seven different art programs before earning her MFA at the
SF Art Institute. America explores how visual art can help
foster tribal values, promote the Cherokee language, affirm
Native identity, and explore the role of tribal peoples
in today’s globalized world. She draws influences
from Bacone School painting, medieval manuscript illumination,
60s TV cartoons, and Moundbuilder shell engravings. She
has shown throughout the United States, Canada and in Europe
for the last twelve years and has won awards at the Heard,
SWAIA's Indian Market, as well as at numerous competitive
shows. She was voted SF Weekly’s Painter of the Year
in 2006.
